Tokaanu
North of Turangi, on the shores of Lake Taupo, is the small town of Tokaanu. In Tokaanu is a number of hot springs, the largest of which is looked after by The Department of Conservation. It is free to walk around the lovely springs, though it will cost you money to swim in the wonderful hot pools nearby. Oddly, Tokaanu does not smell of sulphur, unlike its famous cousins: Rotorua and Hanmer Springs. (January 2005)
